Myrtle Essential Oil, sometimes called “Arrayan essential oil”, is derived from the Myrtus communis species of the myrtle plant. There are many different varieties of myrtle essential oil and each has its own set of uses. The best way, to distinguish which “myrtle” you are looking at, is to pay close attention to the botanical names. For example, Backhousia citriodora is lemon myrtle; whereas, Backhousia anisate is aniseed myrtle. Myrtus communis is the most common species of myrtle used, and within that species there are two varieties, red and green. Red myrtle contains more cineole and has a more “camphorous” aroma, while green myrtle contains more linalool.
